Final Exam info

Sorry for being so absent for so looooong, I was really upset and in denial about classes not meeting in person and wasn't sure what to do.

Anyway, two announcements.

First, the format of the essay final exam (now scheduled for June 26, 2020) will be just the proposal. There will be two proposal prompts and you choose one and write 250 to 300 words (I'm not exactly sure how long you'll have, I assume 90 minutes, if it's less I'll take that into account while grading).

Second, I am on skype (and teams... blech) so if anyone needs to personally consult me then write me an email (my amu.edu.pl address) and we can set up a time to talk (also please give me an idea of what you would want to consult about so I can prepare).

This semester has been a real gutter ball....

My plans....

This semester....

Let's hope they actually start classes again in October.....

Class assignment for May 20, 2020

This week, an optional assignment. No penalty if you don't do it, but a bit of extra credit (don't ask how much...) if you do.

Look back over the materials on matching realities (here and here and here).

Then, either (choose one)

Critique one or more of the systematic metaphors I've given for the US or Poland.

Suggest a new systematic metaphor for Poland that isn't on my list.

Suggest a new systematic metaphor for some other culture you have (had) a lot of contact with.

Here's an example or two, feel free to build on them or critique them if you want,

The suggestion has been made that Chinese men's behavior is not guided by "The (American) football game of life" but by one that might be described as "The family shrine".

Contact and conversations with British people suggest to me that many operate under a WWII metaphor that might be called "Their finest hour" (look it up).

Again, strictly optional but maybe interesting or fun....

The page to post it as below the fold (click where it says 'czytaj więcej').

As always take care and stay healthy (and masked in public!)

Class Materials for May 13, 2020

For this week, more on the metaphoric nature of many people's realities with some common systematic metaphors in America and (my perception of) some systematic metaphors in Poland (feel free to disagree).

Class Materials for May 06, 2020

Okay, remember this assignment?

This week, do an initial outline for the proposal you came up with.

Here's a sample to work from.

If you haven't done the proposal then... you need to come up with a proposal.

If you're not sure what a proposal is, then this might help.

The deadline is May 12, 20.00

Click 'czytaj więcej' to see where to send it.

As always, take care and stay healthy!

Class Materials for .... April 16?

Okay, here are your monologues, not as quickly as I wanted, but better late than never.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised at the quality, so the monologue will definitely be part of the final exam (whenever that might happen....)

Take it easy over the weekend and check back here April 22, as I ponder the next step....

As always, take care and stay healthy!

Class Materials for April 08, 2020

For this week, download and read this.

Then... for each of the three stories, write three questions that could be used to initiate and/or prolong a conversation about the story.
Avoid yes-no questions and avoid 'you' questions like "What do you think about it?" Instead, the questions should be about the subjects of the stories.
Generally there should be a wh-word (who, what, when, how, why, how many, where). Feel free to explore contradictions in the story (f ex, "If moon exploration is too expensive then why are corporations building mining ships?")
For one of them (the arts and entertainment story) you might need to look up some information on the TV show "Tiger King".
If you want to work in groups then....
Two people working together: 4 questions for each story
Three people working together: 5 questions for each story

The deadline is  next Wednesday April 15 by 20.00.
